Mary Eliot Winsor ’27

Mary Eliot WinsorScholarships represent opportunity—for the students who receive them, and for the classmates (and teammates, castmates, bandmates, and friends) whose own lives are richer for knowing them. Generations of Wheeler alumnae/i and families have ensured this type of opportunity continues to abound at Wheeler by establishing named financial aid funds in the School’s endowment. Thanks to their investments, Wheeler is able to open its gates to truly inspiring young learners every year.

The Mary Eliot Winsor ’27 Memorial Scholarship is one of these opportunity-creating funds, initiated through a wonderful gift from Mary to honor and commemorate her nearly century-long relationship with her alma mater while providing students with a life-changing education like the one she experienced.

In 2008, a year after she celebrated her 80th—yes, 80th!—class reunion, she established two gift annuities with appreciated stock assets. Those annuities provided her income for the rest of her life, and, after her passing, funded the scholarship endowment in her name.

Mary’s generosity has brought talented students into Wheeler’s halls each year since 2010, and her fund, which has grown by 216% since it was established, will continue to grow and support future generations.

We are grateful to Mary, her advisors, and the many donors like her who choose to make the thoughtful gifts or bequests that have the power to change the lives of our students—who in turn, become the change-makers of our world. In them, Mary’s remarkable bond with Wheeler endures. What could your legacy be?

Like Mary, you too can get secure income for yourself while also providing educational opportunities at Wheeler. Contact Michele Sczerbinski Diaz ’86 at MicheleDiaz@wheelerschool.org or (401) 528-2132 to learn more.
